A 106,000 hectare alpine national park that covers almost half of the Australian Capital Territory. Namadgi is the northern end of the Australian Alps, has the highest peaks in the ACT, and contains some of the oldest rock art on the east coast of Australia.
Namadgi National Park covers the entire southern half of the ACT and makes up 46 percent of the territory's land area. It forms the northern end of the Australian Alps and connects with Kosciuszko National Park across the NSW border. The park sits on Ngunnawal country and the name 'Namadgi' is the Ngunnawal word for the mountain country of the area.
The park has 170 kilometres of marked walking tracks, including the ACT section of the Australian Alps Walking Track. The summit of Mount Bimberi (1,913 metres) is the highest point in the ACT and is a long but rewarding day walk from the Orroral Valley. Yankee Hat, a much easier walk, leads to a rock shelter with Aboriginal paintings that are at least 800 years old, showing people, kangaroos, dingos and echidnas.
The park is also a major dark sky site. The Orroral Valley, a high-altitude flat valley an hour from the city, has almost no light pollution and is one of the best stargazing spots within easy reach of any Australian capital. The 2020 bushfires burnt through three-quarters of the park but recovery has been strong and most tracks have reopened.
