Booroomba Rocks Walk
Granite cliffs, sweeping Canberra views

Booroomba Rocks is one of the most dramatic viewpoints accessible from Canberra, a stack of tall granite cliffs rising to 1,345 metres in the Brindabella Ranges. The walk (4.5 km return, Grade 4, approximately 2 hours) climbs steeply through mountain ash and snow gum forest to emerge on open granite slabs with panoramic views north across Canberra and west into the ranges. The site is also one of the ACT's main rock climbing venues, with established routes on the southern face.
The walk begins at the Booroomba Rocks carpark at the end of Booroomba Rocks Road, which requires high-clearance vehicles and, in winter, can require snow chains. A well-formed trail leads into tall forest before the gradient steepens considerably. Stone steps and metal mesh sections assist passage through the steepest parts near the summit. Those with more time can continue on an optional 400-metre spur to the highest point, or link onto the Australian Alps Walking Track for extended routes toward Honeysuckle Campground.
The summit area is open granite, requiring care near cliff edges, which are unguarded. The northern peak delivers unobstructed views across the Australian Capital Territory toward Canberra's urban core and the ranges beyond. The area holds cultural significance as a seasonal gathering place where Ngunnawal people came to harvest Bogong moths, a high-protein food source that sustained Aboriginal communities from south-eastern Australia for thousands of years.
Boorooomba Rocks is a popular sunrise and sunset destination, and the dark skies above Namadgi make the carpark a recognised stargazing spot on clear nights. Wildflowers are at their best in spring. Dogs are not permitted, there is no water supply at the carpark, and mobile coverage is absent. Visitors should check road conditions with the Namadgi Visitor Centre before travelling, as Booroomba Rocks Road is an unsealed access track subject to maintenance closures.
