Mission Beach
Where the Reef Meets the Rainforest at Sea Level
On the lands of the Djiru people.
schedule 1 min read / Updated Apr 2026
A string of small beach villages on the Cassowary Coast, halfway between Cairns and Townsville. Mission Beach is the only place where the Wet Tropics rainforest grows directly down to a coral sand beach, and it's the closest mainland point to the outer Great Barrier Reef.
Mission Beach is the collective name for the four villages of Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach, strung along 14 kilometres of palm-lined coast on Djiru country. The Wet Tropics rainforest grows directly down to the dunes here, and the southern cassowary (the giant flightless bird that disperses many of the rainforest's seeds) is regularly seen wandering the village streets and beaches. There are estimated to be only 2,500 wild cassowaries left and Mission Beach is one of the few places they can be reliably encountered.
The outer Great Barrier Reef is around an hour offshore by boat, with day trips to Beaver Reef and Nathan Reef. The town is also the launch point for skydiving over the reef, with Mission Beach Skydive landing directly on the beach.
Mission Beach was severely affected by Cyclone Larry in 2006 and Cyclone Yasi in 2011 but has rebuilt. The dry season from May to October is the best time to visit.
