The Australian Football League Grand Final is the biggest single sporting event on the Australian calendar and is held each year at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on the last Saturday of September. The MCG holds 100,024 people, which is sold out every year, and the match draws broadcast audiences of around 4 million people across the country.
AFL Grand Final day is declared a public holiday in Victoria and has been since 2015. The day starts with the traditional Grand Final Parade through the Melbourne CBD on the Friday and includes a pre-game entertainment programme with live music and ceremony before the 2:30pm bounce.
Even if you are not a football fan, Melbourne takes on a completely different atmosphere for the week leading up to the Grand Final. Pub and restaurant bookings fill up, corporate events dominate the Crown Casino precinct, and AFL-branded events run across Federation Square and Birrarung Marr.
