Wollomombi Falls
Plunging into gorge country
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Among the tallest waterfalls in Australia, Wollomombi Falls sends the Wollomombi River crashing more than 200 metres into the dramatic depths of Wollomombi Gorge within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, roughly 40 kilometres east of Armidale. An easy lookout walk and the nearby Chandler Walking Track reward visitors with views across one of the most spectacular gorge systems on the Northern Tablelands.
Formed where the Wollomombi and Chandler rivers converge before tumbling over the gorge rim, the falls are classed as a horsetail waterfall and sit at an elevation of around 900 metres above sea level. Their volume and drama vary considerably with seasonal rainfall, reaching peak spectacle after heavy rain.
The Wollomombi Falls picnic area provides a shaded base for families, while the lookout platform on the western rim delivers uninterrupted views across the inaccessible gulf below. The Chandler Walking Track follows the ridgeline for closer perspectives of both waterfalls, taking around one hour return at an easy pace.
The site sits on Waterfall Way, the scenic tourist drive connecting Armidale to the mid-north coast, making it a natural anchor stop. A campground is available nearby for those who want to stay overnight under clear tableland skies.
