Perched in the saddle between Mount Amos and Mount Mayson in the pink granite Hazards range, the Wineglass Bay Lookout rewards a steady climb with one of the most photographed vistas in the southern hemisphere. The view sweeps down over a perfect crescent of white sand and aquamarine water enclosed by forested headlands, making it a centrepiece of any Freycinet visit.

The 2.6 km return track rises steeply through coastal woodland past granite boulders, gaining around 200 metres of elevation before levelling at the rocky lookout platform. Resting seats are spaced along the ascent, and toilets and drinking water are available at the car park below. Allow 60 to 90 minutes return at a steady pace, and wear sturdy footwear as the surface is uneven with rough bush steps.

The walk suits reasonably fit adults and older children comfortable on rough ground. From the lookout you can continue a further 1.3 km down to the beach itself, adding about an hour each way and turning the outing into a 6 km return walk of around 2.5 to 3.5 hours. On a clear day, whales and dolphins are occasionally spotted offshore.

A national park pass is required to enter Freycinet National Park. Passes can be purchased online before arrival or at the visitor centre just inside the park entrance, which is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm.
