Twin Falls Gorge
A split cascade in stone country
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Twin Falls Gorge presents one of Kakadu's most dramatic landscapes, a split cascade dropping from a cliff face into a deep pool, flanked by sheer sandstone walls. Situated beyond Jim Jim Falls and requiring a high-clearance 4WD with a snorkel for the creek crossing, it rewards the effort with a sense of wilderness that few corners of Australia can match.
The gorge has been undergoing major infrastructure improvements expected to add new elevated boardwalks and walkways offering unobstructed views. In the meantime, the Twin Falls plateau walk, a challenging return hike, offers sweeping views down into the gorge and across the remote escarpment country of western Arnhem Land.
In the dry season the twin cascades slow and the gorge reveals its full scale. During the wet season, the falls flow with spectacular force but the site is accessible only by air or boat. The nearby Karnamarr campground offers a bush camp with views of the Arnhem Land escarpment for those willing to stay overnight.
Allow at least half an hour of driving from Jim Jim Falls, plus time for the walk. Check the Kakadu Access Report before departing, as the river crossing depth and site status change with rainfall. A snorkelled 4WD is essential for this route.
