The Neck and Truganini Lookout
Twin-sea views at the isthmus

The Neck is the narrow sand isthmus connecting North and South Bruny Island, and climbing its 279 timber steps rewards walkers with a sweeping 360-degree panorama of two channels and the Tasmanian mainland. A memorial at the summit honours Truganini (1812-1876), daughter of a Nuenonne chief, and the Palawa people who called Bruny Island home for thousands of years before European settlement.
The short but steep boardwalk trail rises through coastal scrub and wind-shaped dunes, with viewing platforms offering unobstructed vistas across both the D'Entrecasteaux Channel to the west and the North Bruny coastline to the east. The walk takes around 15 minutes return and is rated easy despite the stair count.
At dusk from September to February the isthmus transforms into one of Tasmania's great wildlife spectacles, as thousands of short-tailed shearwaters and little penguins return from the sea to their sand-dune burrows. Free parking and toilets are available at the base.
