St Francis Xavier Cathedral

Completed in stages between 1916 and 1938, St Francis Xavier Cathedral in central Geraldton is the masterpiece of the extraordinary priest-architect John Hawes, a man who was also a hermit, a Franciscan friar, and a former Anglican minister. The building's Romanesque dome, Byzantine interior arches, and warm local stone make it one of the most architecturally distinctive Catholic cathedrals in Australia.
John Hawes designed and largely built the cathedral himself over more than two decades, and the building reflects his singular vision at every turn. The interior arches were painted with motifs inspired by the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba in Spain, giving the nave an unexpected warmth and colour. A major restoration was completed in 2017, the same year the pipe organ was rebuilt. In 2019 a large church carillon was installed in the cathedral tower.
Guided walks run on several days each week, departing from the adjacent Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre where visitors can also learn about Hawes's remarkable life. Tickets for tours are a few dollars and no booking is required.
The cathedral is listed on the Western Australian Heritage Register. It sits at the corner of Cathedral Avenue and Maitland Street, a short walk from the town centre.
