Every Saturday morning, Salamanca Place transforms into one of Australia's most celebrated outdoor markets. More than 300 stallholders line the historic sandstone precinct selling fresh Tasmanian produce, handmade crafts, artisan food, jewellery, and local art. The market has run continuously since 1972 and remains the social and cultural heartbeat of Hobart, drawing locals and visitors alike.
Salamanca Market stretches the full length of Salamanca Place, flanked by mid-19th-century sandstone warehouses that once stored wool and grain shipped through Sullivans Cove. The stalls range from organic fruit and vegetables to woodwork, ceramics, soaps, vintage clothing, and street food from around the world.
Arriving early rewards visitors with the best produce and shorter crowds. Live musicians perform throughout the morning and small cafes and restaurants along the strip open early to cater to market-goers. Entry is completely free, making it one of Tasmania's most accessible attractions for any budget.
The market runs rain or shine, every Saturday of the year except when Christmas Day or Anzac Day falls on a Saturday. Parking is available nearby on weekends, and the waterfront location means it pairs naturally with a stroll along Hobart's Constitution Dock.
