Housed in a restored Victorian-era railway goods shed at the heart of Victor Harbor, the South Australian Whale Centre brings the southern ocean and its megafauna to life through interactive displays, a life-size southern right whale mural, and a conservation exhibit. It is the state's dedicated interpretive hub for whale culture, science, and history.
The centre opened in 1994 and relocated into the historic railway goods shed following a merger with the Victor Harbor Visitor Centre in 2021. Inside, visitors explore the biology and migration patterns of southern right whales, humpbacks, blue whales, and sperm whales through models, footage, and interpretive panels. A fossil dig area provides hands-on engagement for younger visitors.
The conservation exhibit documents campaigns against commercial whaling, placing Victor Harbor's whale-watching culture in a global context. The life-size mural depicting a famous southern right whale pair, long-term residents of Encounter Bay, anchors the main gallery and gives a true sense of the animals' scale.
The centre sits within easy walking distance of the horse-tram platform, Granite Island causeway, and the Victor Harbor foreshore, making it a natural first stop before heading out on the water or to the island. Entry prices are modest and children under four enter free.
