Kyneton's Piper Street is one of Victoria's best-preserved gold rush main streets, lined with handsome bluestone buildings dating from the 1850s and 1860s. Once a watering hole for miners passing through, the precinct has evolved into a celebrated destination for food, wine, antiques and artisan goods, drawing visitors from Melbourne and across the region every weekend.
The street's anchor buildings tell the history of early colonial Victoria. The Royal George Hotel, built in 1855, still operates as a pub. A bakery occupies an 1862 steam mill, where visitors can eat artisan sourdough in a space that still carries the atmosphere of a working flour mill. A wine company operates from a preserved 1860s building.
Beyond the heritage architecture, the precinct offers galleries, boutiques, and a cluster of acclaimed cafes and restaurants. Several venues are known for traditional pork pies, cooking classes and French-inflected menus. The nearby Campaspe River walk extends the visit beyond the commercial strip.
The Kyneton Visitor Information Centre provides maps and seasonal event guides. Parking is available along the street and in nearby laneways, and the precinct is an easy walk from the Kyneton railway station.
