Old Dubbo Gaol
Colonial justice brought to life
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Operating from 1847 to 1966, the Old Dubbo Gaol held prisoners for 119 years before becoming one of regional New South Wales's most compelling heritage museums. Actors in period costume perform daily theatrical displays, and the gallows gallery and original sandstone cells tell sombre stories of colonial-era justice in the western interior.
Visitors move through male cell blocks, the exercise yards, a watchtower, and the gallows gallery where public hangings once took place. The theatrical presentations bring specific historical cases to life, and children can engage with the Prisoner Puzzles activity to earn prizes. After-dark Twilight Tours and Beyond the Grave experiences are available separately for those who want a more atmospheric visit.
The gaol sits in the heart of Dubbo on Macquarie Street and can be combined with other city-centre attractions as part of a full day out. It is pet friendly, and a discount applies when booking tickets online in advance. Dubbo Region residents can enter free through the Inmates Program with proof of address.
The site is managed by Dubbo Regional Council and represents one of the best-preserved examples of nineteenth-century correctional architecture in inland New South Wales.
