Housed in a magnificent 1872 bluestone wool store in the heart of Geelong, the National Wool Museum is Australia's only dedicated museum of wool. It traces the story of an industry that shaped the nation, from the pastoral runs of the colonial era to the global fashion houses that use Australian Merino today. Engaging displays, interactive exhibits, and a working loom make it a rewarding visit for all ages.
The museum building is an attraction in its own right, a grand Victorian-era wool store with thick bluestone walls that once held bales bound for the mills of England. Inside, permanent galleries cover shearing, processing, textile production, and the social history of the woolgrowing families who opened up the Australian interior. A massive working Axminster loom is a perennial highlight.
Temporary exhibitions rotate through the year, covering fashion, fibre arts, and contemporary textile design. The museum is fully accessible with ramp access to every level, and accessible parking is located directly in front of the building on Moorabool Street.
The museum shop stocks a curated range of wool products, knitwear, and gifts, and entry to the shop is free. Plan for at least 90 minutes to do justice to the full collection.
