Naracoorte Caves is South Australia's only World Heritage Site and one of the world's ten greatest fossil localities. Sitting south of the township of Naracoorte, the park preserves 28 limestone caves, four of which are open to visitors through guided and self-guided tours. The fossil deposits of Victoria Fossil Cave have yielded remains of more than 90 vertebrate species, including giant Pleistocene megafauna.
Victoria Fossil Cave was discovered in 1969 when explorers broke through into a chamber that had acted as a natural pitfall trap for over 200,000 years. Tens of thousands of specimens have been recovered from its fossil bed, representing creatures from tiny frogs to buffalo-sized marsupials such as Diprotodon, the marsupial lion Thylacoleo carnifex, and giant kangaroos. The Wonambi Fossil Centre brings these discoveries to life through interactive displays.
Alexandra Cave offers a more decorative experience, showcasing stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone formations in elegant guided tours. The park also runs seasonal bat cave tours that use cameras to display the normally off-limits maternity colony of southern bent-wing bats.
Adventure caving options give visitors the chance to explore undeveloped passages in helmets and overalls. The park has a cafe, campground, and an accessible walking loop, making it a full-day destination for families and serious geology enthusiasts alike.
