The Museum of Tropical Queensland on Flinders Street is the region's premier cultural institution, bringing together natural history, maritime archaeology, and the extraordinary ecology of the tropics under one roof. Its centrepiece is the wreck of HMS Pandora, the Royal Navy frigate that sank off Cape York in 1791 while transporting Bounty mutineers back to England. Entry to all permanent galleries is free.
The Pandora exhibit is the museum's most striking feature. More than 5,000 artefacts recovered from the wreck site are displayed, including navigational instruments, personal possessions, ship's fittings, and human remains, all presented with careful archaeological context. It stands as one of the most significant maritime archaeology collections in Australia.
Beyond Pandora, the museum's North Queensland galleries explore the natural environment of the wet tropics, the Great Barrier Reef, and the ancient cultural heritage of the region's First Nations peoples. The Sciencentre interactive gallery appeals particularly to children with hands-on science exhibits. Temporary exhibitions rotate through the year and may carry an additional ticket price.
The museum is open daily from 9am to 4pm, closing on Good Friday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. It sits on Flinders Street in the Townsville CBD, within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal and the Strand foreshore.
