Mundi Mundi Plains Lookout
Where the earth curves away

Reached by a sealed road five kilometres west of Silverton and about thirty minutes from Broken Hill, the Mundi Mundi Plains Lookout sits atop the Barrier Ranges and offers one of the most genuinely vast panoramas in Australia. The plains below extend some 80 kilometres to the South Australian border with barely a feature to interrupt the sightline, a view so wide and flat that visitors commonly report seeing the curvature of the earth on clear days.
The lookout's association with cinema is deep-rooted. The chase sequence in Mad Max 2 was filmed on the plains below, and the landscape later appeared in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The scenery has an other-worldly stillness that rewards quiet observation, and wedge-tailed eagles, emus and kangaroos are frequently spotted on the plains and the slopes of the ranges.
Sunset visits are especially popular: the west-facing aspect catches the last light in extraordinary shades of orange and violet, and on calm evenings photographers line up along the viewing area to capture the fading colour. The Silverton Wind Farm, visible to the south, adds a contemporary dimension to the ancient scenery.
There are no facilities at the lookout itself, so visitors should bring water, food and sunscreen. The site is free to enter and accessible around the clock.
