Mon Repos Conservation Park, 14 kilometres east of Bundaberg, protects the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the Australian mainland and the most significant loggerhead turtle population in the South Pacific. The purpose-built visitor centre operates year-round, with guided Turtle Encounter tours running nightly from November to late March during the nesting and hatching season.
During turtle season, ranger-guided Turtle Encounter tours lead small groups onto the beach at night to watch loggerhead, flatback, and green turtles haul themselves ashore, dig their nests, and lay eggs, or, later in the season, to witness hatchlings scrambling to the ocean. Tours are carefully managed to minimise disturbance and include access to the Turtle Tales immersive theatre inside the centre.
The Turtle Tales theatre uses projected imagery and soundscapes to tell the story of the loggerhead's extraordinary life cycle, from hatchling to breeding adult across decades of open ocean. Daytime visitors can explore the interactive museum displays free of charge, browse the gift shop, and grab a meal at the cafe on site.
