Metung is a small, charming village almost completely surrounded by water on a narrow peninsula between Lake King and Bancroft Bay, about 18 kilometres west of Lakes Entrance. Long known as the Riviera of the South, this relaxed lakeside retreat draws visitors with its calm marina, waterfront dining, boat hire, and easy access to the broader Gippsland Lakes waterway system.

The village foreshore and boardwalk are perfect for an unhurried stroll with views across glassy lake water to the surrounding wetlands and distant hills. Boat hire is available from local operators, allowing visitors to explore the interconnected lakes, discover secluded coves and watch for Burrunan dolphins that are occasionally spotted in the bay. Fishing is excellent, with bream, tailor, flathead and King George whiting all targeted from local jetties and hire boats.

The Metung Hotel, a local institution, sits at the water's edge and serves regional food and wine with uninterrupted lake views. A monthly farmers market brings local producers of bread, fresh produce, seafood and artisan goods to the Village Green. Coastal galleries and farm studios in and around the village showcase locally made sculpture, jewellery and painting.

Nearby points of interest include Nyerimilang Heritage Park, approximately four kilometres to the east, and the Bataluk Cultural Trail site at Legend Rock on the shores of Bancroft Bay, where Gunaikurnai legend tells of a fisherman transformed into stone.
