Kuranda Scenic Railway
Historic train through rainforest
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Running since 1891, the Kuranda Scenic Railway climbs from Cairns through dense World Heritage rainforest to the village of Kuranda, 328 metres above sea level. The 34-kilometre journey winds through 15 hand-cut tunnels and across high bridges, offering views of Barron Gorge and the thundering Barron Falls that are simply not accessible by road.
The line was built by hand during the 1880s to connect the coastal port to the Atherton Tableland goldfields, and the engineering feat behind it remains extraordinary. More than 1,500 men worked through wet seasons and rugged terrain to complete a railway that became a lifeline for the region. Today the original Victorian-era stations, including the heritage-listed Freshwater Station, are preserved in fine condition.
Passengers travel in Heritage Class open-air carriages or Gold Class saloon cars with commentary, beverages, and wider windows. The train departs Cairns Central Station each morning, arriving in Kuranda roughly two hours later, with return services in the afternoon. Many visitors combine a one-way train journey with the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway for a full-day loop.
Kuranda village itself offers markets, wildlife sanctuaries, and rainforest walks. The railway does not operate on Christmas Day.
