The Hoochery Distillery
Kimberley rum from the source
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Hoochery Distillery sits on the Dessert family farm 15 km from Kununurra along Weaber Plain Road, and holds the distinction of being the oldest operating legal still in Western Australia. Using Ord River sugar cane grown on the surrounding irrigation flats, the distillery produces a range of award-winning rums and gins entirely on site. A daily tour, cellar door tastings, and a cafe make it a full afternoon out.
The distillery was established in 1996 and has built a loyal following for its Ord River Rum, which has won Best Australian Rum in national competitions. Visitors can join the daily tour of the handmade copper pot still to see how the spirit is produced from cane to bottle, then head to the cellar door for tasting paddles. The interior is designed in the style of a wild west saloon, complete with timber bar and corrugated iron walls.
The cafe is open year-round for coffee and cake, and during the dry season a full lunch menu is served. The Hoochery is well-suited to a late-morning or afternoon visit combined with a drive along the Ord Valley back roads.
