Nestled within the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens, the Hinkler Hall of Aviation celebrates Bert Hinkler, the Bundaberg-born aviator who made the first solo flight between England and Australia in 1928. The modern museum houses aircraft, engines, and personal artefacts, while the gardens surrounding it offer a free, leafy escape with lakes, themed garden rooms, and abundant birdlife.
Inside the hall, interactive exhibits trace Hinkler's remarkable career, from his early experiments with gliders on the local dunes to his record-breaking England-to-Australia solo journey in a tiny Avro Avian biplane. Replica aircraft hang from the ceiling alongside original engines, flying suits, and logbooks, bringing the golden age of aviation to life for visitors of all ages.
The broader Bundaberg Botanic Gardens complex is free to enter and open every day. Covering 27 hectares beside the Burnett River, the gardens contain living plant collections including a rare fruit tree orchard, Chinese and Japanese garden rooms, and a lake that supports more than 100 species of birds. A heritage steam train circles the grounds on weekends for a small additional charge.
