Cape Tourville Lighthouse
Easy boardwalk, sweeping views
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Standing 126 metres above the Tasman Sea on the eastern tip of the Freycinet Peninsula, Cape Tourville Lighthouse is one of Tasmania's most accessible scenic highlights. A short, flat boardwalk circuit delivers panoramic views of Wineglass Bay, Sleepy Bay and the offshore Nuggets rock islands, all within a 20-minute stroll from the car park.
The 600 metre loop track begins on a dirt path through low coastal scrub before transitioning onto an elevated timber boardwalk that hugs the granite cliff edge. Much of the route is wheelchair accessible with assistance, making it one of the few spots in the national park that is genuinely suitable for visitors with limited mobility. The Hazards range frames the western view while the open Southern Ocean stretches east.
The concrete cylindrical lighthouse tower was erected in 1971 and stands 11 metres tall at a focal height of 126 metres above sea level, giving its light a nominal range of 28 nautical miles along Tasmania's east coast. It was built automatically and has never been manned. The cape was named during French exploration of the peninsula in 1802.
Whale watching is a bonus here from around June to October, when humpback and southern right whales migrate along the coast. The car park is approximately 7.8 km from Coles Bay township via Cape Tourville Road. A national park pass is required.
