Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie)
Rainwater lake, silica shores

Sitting 100 metres above sea level in the heart of K'gari, Boorangoora is one of the world's great perched lakes. Fed only by rainfall with no streams flowing in or out, its water is so chemically pure it supports very little aquatic life. The result is water of extraordinary clarity lapping against powdery white silica sand, a combination found nowhere else on earth.
Boorangoora covers about 80 hectares and stretches 1,200 metres in length. The lake holds water because a layer of compacted organic matter and sand beneath the basin acts as a natural seal, preventing the rainwater from draining away. Silica sand lines the shore and the lake bed, giving the water a vivid blue-green colour that shifts with the light.
Swimming is the main activity, and the lake is calm and safe for all ages. Dingo-proof fenced picnic areas, toilets, and an information board are provided at the day-use area. The lake sits south of Kingfisher Bay Resort and can be reached via an internal sand track. No powered watercraft are permitted, and visitors are asked not to use sunscreen or insect repellent before entering the water to protect its purity.
